Times Higher Education(THE) officially released its 2020 Asian University Rankings on June 3, 2020. This year, 489 universities from 30 countries and regions in Asia participated in the 2020 Times Higher Education Asian University Ranking, and 81 universities from the Chinese mainland made the list.
Times Higher Education (THE) has published the Asian University Rankings every year since 2013, and this is the eighth consecutive year it has done so. For the first time, Tsinghua University and Peking University are in the top two Asian universities, with the National University of Singapore in third place.
In comparison with 2019, nine more universities from the Chinese mainland qualified for the ranking, with a total participation of 81. In the Asian university rankings, three universities from the Chinese mainland are among the top 10, and 13 universities are among the top 50. Tsinghua University retained the top spot for the second year in a row, after taking the top spot for the first time last year. Peking University rose from fifth to second place, and the University of Science and Technology of China ranked 10th.
Chinese universities account for half of the top 10 Asian universities, with six making the top 10. In addition to Tsinghua University, Peking University and University of Science and Technology of China, Hong Kong also has the University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the top ten.
Zhejiang University rose to 13th place from 14th last year, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University moved up five places from 24th to the top 20 (19th).
Other outstanding universities include Huazhong University of Science and Technology, which moved up 13 places from 47th to 34th. Central South University rose from 85th to 54th, advancing 31 places. Hunan University jumped 24 places to 73rd from 97th. Shenzhen University surged from 113 to 88 to break into the top 100.
